BALTIMORE, MD — Employees at Vulcan Materials Co. Sacremento Aggregates Plant facility received international recognition for their contributions to wildlife habitat conservation at the Wildlife Habitat Council’s (WHC) 20th Annual Symposium, 20/20 Vision: Celebrating the Past, Looking to the Future.

The employees at Vulcan Materials Co. distinguished themselves by winning the coveted Rookie of the Year award, which goes to one newly certified program each year and exemplifies a superior wildlife habitat program. WHC’s prestigious International Conservation Awards recognize voluntary activities by companies that demonstrate excellence in the areas of wildlife habitat enhancement and restoration.

Vulcan Materials Co.’s Sacramento Aggregates Plant exhibits an extensive commitment to environmental stewardship initiatives via the numerous habitat enhancement projects that continue to benefit wildlife. The site has approximately 20 employees, 10 of whom have been actively involved in the various habitat projects throughout the site. The 400-acre site includes 236 acres for mining, the 27-acre Laguna Creek Corridor Preserve, and the 137-acre Vernal Pool Preserve. Projects are focused primarily around the two preserves. The property is ecologically diverse and contains wetlands, vernal pools, marshlands, grassland and riparian forest.

Habitat enhancement projects include using native plants as part of the site’s landscaping, as well as planting native grasses and wildflowers for ground cover and erosion control. The Wildlife Team manages constructed vernal pools for a diversity of species, including the federally threatened vernal pool fairy shrimp (Branchinecta lynchi) and the vernal pool tadpole shrimp (Lepidurus packardi). The team also planted native oaks in the Vernal Pool Preserve.

The Sacramento Aggregates Plant Wildlife Team also recognizes the importance of a balanced use of natural resources, including mineral resources and wildlife habitat. In order to increase the public’s conservation awareness, the site provides earth science and natural resource management tours to school groups, and invites the local community to participate in annual Earth Day celebrations.

Celebrating 20 years in conservation, the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) is a nonprofit, nonlobbying organization dedicated to increasing the quality and amount of wildlife habitat on corporate, private and public lands. WHC devotes its resources to building partnerships with corporations and conservation groups to create solutions that balance the demands of economic growth with the requirements of a healthy, biodiverse and sustainable environment. More than 2.4 million acres in 46 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and 16 other countries are managed for wildlife through WHC-assisted projects. To learn more, visit www.wildlifehc.org.
