Maybrook Asphalt consists of a six ton McCarter batch plant with two 200-ton silos. It had functioned as a four ton Stansteel plant from 1973 to 1990, when it was changed over due to increased asphalt demand in the area. The plant sits on about 45 acres located in an industrial area in the village of Maybrook within the town of Montgomery, surrounded by various warehouses, including Home Depot and Best Buy. It’s directly in between Middletown and Newburgh, NY, just off Interstate highway 84.
35 and going strong This plant was built in 1973 by New York Bituminous, then was purchased by Ritangela Construction in 1982. In 1995 Callanan Industries, part of Oldcastle Materials, purchased it, and it was transferred to Tilcon in January 2008. The plant celebrates its 35th anniversary in business this year. It’s interesting to note that Callanan Industries was the first Oldcastle company in the U.S.
Jerry Fletcher, New York asphalt manager, said, “I would like to welcome the Maybrook Asphalt Team. They bring many years of experience to Tilcon New York Inc. I would also like to thank everyone that worked on the transition for his or her help and cooperation. We look forward to a safe and productive season.”
Kevin Schuler, the plant’s general manager, has been part of Maybrook Asphalt since 1975 and has seen many changes. He said that the asphalt plant used to be supplied with stone from its own quarry a short distance away but the reserves were used up and the quarry shut down in the year 2000.
Since the job mixes currently in production and contracted for this year were based on Callanan mixes, the plant will continue to use stone from Callanan’s quarry in Bridgeville, NY. But, going forward, the new mixes will be based on stone to be supplied from Clinton Point, which is the closest Tilcon quarry.
Plans for the site include bringing in a contractor for recycling and crushing this year. And, the plant will be making its own RAP.
Its own fleet of trucks Maybrook has something that no other plant in the Tilcon New York division has - its own fleet of trucks, which consists of eight tractor trailers, five tractor flowboy trucks to haul asphalt, and five tri-axle dump trucks to haul stone in and to deliver asphalt out of the plant.
Something that’s not unique to Maybrook is the concern and strict adherence to safety and quality policies that all Tilcon locations exhibit. Maybrook has consistently received the Diamond Achievement Commendation for Excellence in Hot Mix Asphalt Plant/Site Operations from the National Asphalt Pavement Association.
In addition, the plant has a proven track record of community involvement, has worked with Habitat for Humanity within Orange County, and contributes material for Eagle Scout projects each year throughout the area.
Start up of the plant is scheduled for April 7. This will coincide with a major construction project starting on April 14. On that date Tilcon Construction will begin a 15 mile mill and fill job on Route 84 that is planned to use about 85,000 tons of asphalt.
“We at Maybrook Asphalt have been working together with Tilcon New York Construction since the day the construction division was formed,” Schuler said. “Now that we are a part of the Tilcon family, we only see better things happening.”
