NRMCA names Tennessee State Association of the Year

SILVER SPRING, MD —  The Tennessee Concrete Association (TCA) has been named as the 2008 NRMCA State Association of the Year, an award which honors state and area associations for their contributions to the industry in the areas of research, education, advocacy and promotion.

The winner was selected from a field of outstanding nominations, according to National Ready Mixed Concrete Association Construction Industry Alliances Committee chairman Stephen Thomas of Consumers Concrete Corp., Kalamazoo, MI. “As a judge for this year’s award and having served as a judge in the past, I am continually overwhelmed by the services, products and programs advancing the industry through the work of our state and area associations.”

Fellow judge Elizabeth “Boo” Twohy of Capital Concrete in Norfolk, VA, echoed this sentiment, noting that “when you judge this competition, you are definitely choosing a ‘best of the best’ — all of the entries were award worthy.” Judge David Robison of Delta Industries, Inc. in Jackson, MS, remarked that “the entries in the competition also show a very high level of interaction between our state association partners and NRMCA, through education programming, distribution of materials and strategic planning.”

Some of TCA’s recent accomplishments include:
  • Receipt of the 5th Annual Trade Association Environmental Stewardship Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in recognition of exemplary industry leadership and performance related to stewardship of the environment.
  • One dozen pervious installation demonstrations statewide, in addition to multiple sessions of NRMCA’s Pervious Contractor Certification program, leading to a significant increase in the number of pervious projects as well as an increase in the size of constructed pervious projects.
  • Development of a new Web site targeting concrete users, providing common sense concrete information and a directory highlighting contractors with certifications and training.

The award will be presented to TCA executive director Alan Sparkman at the 2009 NRMCA Annual Convention next month in Orlando. Previous winners of this award include the Arkansas Ready Mixed Concrete Association, Florida Concrete & Products Association, Mississippi Concrete Industries Association, Washington Aggregates & Concrete Association, Connecticut Ready Mixed Concrete Association, Texas Aggregates & Concrete Association and the Indiana Ready Mixed Concrete Association.

NRMCA, based in Silver Spring, MD, represents the producers of ready mixed concrete and the companies that provide materials, equipment and support to the industry. It conducts education, training, promotion, research, engineering, safety, environmental, technological, lobbying and regulatory programs.
