NRMCA combines data reporting for plant safety contest and safety benchmarking survey

SILVER SPRING, MD — The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association has combined its Plant Safety Contest and Safety Benchmarking Survey into a single submission in an effort to improve the data reporting process for its producer membership.

“We streamlined the process of collecting safety data by combining the Plant Safety Contest and Safety Benchmarking Surveys to make it easier for members to participate,” said Steve Jones, director of safety and human resources at NRMCA member company Chandler Concrete Co., Inc. and NRMCA Safety Task Group chairman. “The new system has a one-time submission of data instead of multiple requests for information to the membership. These are two very important data sources for our industry and anything we can do to streamline the process should increase the overall level of participation.”

The new timeframe for submission is Jan.15 through April 15, for both the safety contest and the benchmarking survey. The benchmarking data will then be extrapolated in time for an estimated final report to be issued by July 15. The safety contest will have a three tier system with plants being awarded gold, silver and bronze prize levels depending on their level of safety achievement.

“The incident rate in the ready mixed concrete industry, while low compared to other industries, is still unacceptable and we must continue to address these very serious safety issues,” added Gary Mullings, NRMCA’s senior vice president of operations and compliance. “By combining these two programs, we gather more accurate and timely safety data to address the safety issues our members face every day. We are also trying to have an online submission to save even more time and effort with data submission.”

“The plant safety contest and safety benchmarking survey are prime examples of the ready mixed concrete industry’s commitment to safety and to addressing safety issues as quickly as possible,” said NRMCA president Robert Garbini.

NRMCA, based in Silver Spring, MD, represents the producers of ready mixed concrete and the companies that provide materials, equipment and support to the industry. It conducts education, training, promotion, research, engineering, safety, environmental, technological, lobbying and regulatory programs.
