The new Hitachi EX1200-6 is based on the proven qualities of the UH Series of the 1970s, the EX Series which debuted in 1988, and all subsequent improvements suggested by real-life experiences from mines and quarries around the world. This class of unit has been so popular for Hitachi that it has delivered over 600 of the EX1200s, and over 400 units of the previous 90-110-ton-class models — many to repeat customers — making it one of the most widely used, if not the most widely used mining excavators in the world. The advantages of a steel track over rubber tires for quarry and mining use are significant. There is greater productivity since more time is spent loading material than traveling back and forth from the face to the hauler. Cost per ton is less as there are no expensive tires to replace. And the lifespan of the excavator is longer than a loader as there is less wear and tear. The EX1200-6 is available in both front shovel and backhoe configurations. Bucket capacity on the backhoe version is 3.93-8.8 yd3 (3.0-6.7 m3). It takes 3-4 buckets to fill a 40-ton ADT, 3-5 to fill the Hitachi EH750-3 42-ton truck, and 5-7 passes to fill the EH1100-3 (65-ton) truck.

| Front-shovel bucket capacity ranges from 7.7 to 8.5 yd3 (5.9-6.5 m3). It takes 5-6 passes to fill a 40-ton ADT and 6-7 to fill an EH750-3 42-ton truck.

While the operator’s cab layout, controls, and monitor are from the Hitachi Zaxis Dash-3 line of construction excavators, the main frame, undercarriage, swing gear/bearing, and modular design of the engine compartment, radiator and oil cooler, and control valve, place it squarely in the aggregates and mining camp. Exclusive auto-leveling crowd mechanism for the front-shovel configuration increases job efficiency with one-lever control. Other features include: - Tier-2 Cummins engine. - New low-effort short-throw levers with electric fly-by-wire. - Redesigned backhoe front-attachment geometry and linkage for increased bucket and arm digging forces. - The popular Optimum Hydraulic System (OHS)™ is used along with a proven swing-priority system for smooth and efficient combined operations. - Modular design of engine compartment, radiator and oil cooler, control valve, and attachment hoses. - Upgraded undercarriage components to handle increased bucket and lifting capacities. - Upgraded main frame and swing gear/bearing. - Increased productivity with greater bucket capacity, increased digging forces, and increased hydraulic flow. - Hitachi’s e-Service enables owners to download critical field data to their office for remote field monitoring. Complete Machine Information Center (MIC) data can be downloaded in the field with a Palm Pilot. - Updated Machine Information Center measures 58 items versus 12 from previous model.
